Nova Club Ride - 14th May 2022 (0830 Start)

Anyone participating in a club ride, whether a club member or not, must abide by the Highway Code, ride responsibility, sensibly and respect other road users at all times. Please remember your behaviour on the bike reflects on the club, even if other road users don't share the same courtesy to you.

Post by MCullen » Fri May 13, 2022 12:20 pm

Dear Legends

Please join us for our club ride round glorious Yorkshire, starting at 0830 from St Marys Walk.

PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE TWO OPTIONS THIS WEEK.

Short Route:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39396584
https://www.strava.com/routes/2960153490325090508

Long Route:
https://www.strava.com/routes/2960153651274125516
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39395890
Please download map as it helps significantly when most know the route ahead.

As usual, there will be a few Groups:

- The Nova Train: Speed, attacking and pain is what its all about on the Train. If you need to ask the price of a Ticket, your legs cant afford it. 21mph+++

- B 17-20mph+ with regular time above 24mph on flats.
The Bs are generally non-drop but if you are struggling, please shout out and hopefully some of the stronger riders can sweep and assist. Could still be dropped.

- C 14-18mph (GROUP SUBJECT TO DEMAND AND WHO TURNS UP - IF THIS PACE IS FOR YOU, PLEASE SUPPORT THE GROUP AND HELP US BUILD MOMENTUM FOR OTHER RIDERS.

Each Group will appoint a Group Captain (GC) on the morning, please support your GC on the ride as they govern pace etc.

GC and group depending, the last 15 miles could be a drop zone as the pace and stronger riders press on.

***Please observe the following guidance for all our safety and enjoyment***:

- As always, could be dropped, but no snot please!

- We warmly welcome non-Nova riders and if you like the rides, banter and pace etc, please join our club to support its overall development.

- Please show courtesy to drivers wishing to get past and observe the Highway Code. We know the circumstances of the size of the group its speed and the nature of the road bring many variables to the ability for faster vehicles to pass safely.

- Single Out when the road narrows to allow safe passage of vehicles.

- When you sign up to join Harrogate Nova we ask that you "abide by the Highway Code, ride responsibly and sensibly. Riders are responsible for their own safety and must ride in a manner that is safe for themselves, other riders and road users".

Please refer to British Cycling Top tips for being courteous cyclists, covering a wide range of situations:

Have a great ride.

Dear All

As requested please ensure you are abiding by the Highway Code at all times. I’d rather not get the type of Facebook message that came through on Saturday….

“ hi, I would just like to advise you of some very dangerous riding from a group of your cyclists heading into Boroughbridge at 11.30 this morning.

they were riding in a bunch but 4 or 5 abreast meaning that they had several riders on the wrong side of the road. I had to completely stop and pull to the side to avoid the cyclists on the wrong side coming towards me.

I am a very keen road rider and racer myself so this is not a complaint about cyclists however please do have some rules otherwise your riders will have an accident and it causes drivers to complain about all cyclists if your riders are riding dangerously.

please reply acknowledging this email and that you will speak to your ride leaders and ensure that they respect the road”

Hi Fran,

Thanks for this update. It seems like a very fair & well worded message.

There were a number of groups on the road at the weekend & I’m not sure where this incident occurred. Perhaps it was on Boroughbridge high street where it iwas double parked as I recall it being very narrow and vehicles could only pass single file.

Regardless of where or when it happened it is a timely reminder to ride sensibly & with consideration for other road users and pedestrians.

Best regards,

Simon

Hello Fran,

Apologies for the very late reply as I've only just seen your message. I will post a specific message to the club as part of this weeks ride update.

Im sorry to hear the group has ridden this way, especially in a built up area.

Michael
