Nova Crew Dominate The Fred Whitton Sportive in the Lakes

Alongside 2000 other competitors, in stunning conditions a number of Harrogate Nova riders took part in the annual The Fred Whitton Challenge, one of the most popular sportives in the UK, also famed as being one of the toughest. Consisting of a 112 mile sportive around the Lake District, starting at Grasmere and taking in climbs of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott & Wrynose passes.

With an unusually good forecast, there was the chance of some good times, and so it proved! Most notably Greg Ketteringham finishing in 6 hours and 5 minutes one of the fastest overall finishers, closely followed Tom Denwood in 6.10, possibly left ruing how much faster he could have gone without 2 punctures! Then Mike Worden and Andy Baker where next over the line in 6.31, with Simon Ketteringham and Paul Lehan hot on their heals in 6.34. Next up was Ben Hotham in 6.48, Tony Bradley in 7.17, Jonty Bright in 7.22, Mike Wilberforce 7.31, Darrell Varley in 8.50, Pete Flynn in 9.07 and other local riders, John Reid in 7.27 and Andrew in Stringer in 8.02.

The support was incredible, with spectators lining most of the summits, cheering on with shouts of encouragement. The level of organisation was amazing, the Fred Whitton Team should be very proud. They have so far raised over £1,000,000 for charity.

A Dead Heat In the Ladies Race at Event 2

Event 2 of the Beech House Dental Practice TT League was the ten mile out and back course of Arkendale to Walshford and back. In a complete contrast to event 1 the race was held in summer like conditions but with a stiff wind . The ladies event ended in a dead heat between Ele Haresign and Corinne Mitchell in 25:51, which was a new lady veteran’s record for Corinne. The men’s event had over double the competitors of last week but the podium was the same with Duncan Mullier 12 seconds shy of the league record in 21:34 ahead of Dylan Flesher 22:15 and Rob Senior in 22:55. Ride of the night went to Harry Wrightson, who improved by over three minutes with 26:38 to win the Most Improved Rider event.
